President’s Corner August 2011 Yes, the heat is upon us! I can’t help but think of hot yoga every time I walk out my front door and within minutes my clothes are damp from sweat and my blow dried hair starts to curl. So, being the optimistic person that I am, rather than talk about all of the discomforts associated with our hot weather, I decided instead to point out the benefits of heat and humidity. First, heat and humidity over 95 degrees increases blood flow which delivers higher levels of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. The higher temperatures help improve respiratory and cardiovascular health as well as stimulate your lymphatic system which helps to flush out toxins. The heat also strengthens your immune system, increases your metabolism and has been known to correct hormonal imbalances. In addition to all that, it loosens your muscles and lubricates your joints and ligaments to allow for greater degree of flexibility. So next time you’re outside in the heat, consider “striking a pose” and get into that downward dog position to really maximize the benefits. Most Importantly- DRINK WATER! ☺
